If you’re a hamster owner, you may wonder can your little hammie eat these fruits? Well, the answer is yes! Whilst many treats that people love are not safe for hamsters to eat, banana is an example of a human food that is safe for your little fluff ball to enjoy.
Most hamsters absolutely love bananas, in fact if you’re eating one yourself then you’ll often see your pet sniffing around, trying to make out what the delightful aroma is!

Hamsters should be fed a balanced diet that includes a good amount of healthy vitamins and minerals. Bananas can make up part of this diet as they are packed with lots of good things that help to keep hamsters healthy and happy.

- Vitamin B6 – great for the immune system, brain and nervous system
- Calcium – helps keep teeth and bones strong

This means that hamsters should not be given anywhere near as much banana as humans would eat. If you’re introducing any new food to a hammie then you should always be wary, giving them a really small amount at first to ensure that their body accepts it.
How much Banana can I give my hamster?
As with any treat, bananas should be given in moderation. Hamsters are so much smaller than we are and that means that their portion size should be tiny too. The portion size that you give your hamster should reflect their size, with larger Syrian hamsters able to have more than their smaller dwarf or Chinese cousins. Due to the high sugar content that bananas have, they should only be given once a week at most. If you overfeed your hamster with banana it may cause diarrhoea and other problems, so you should always check with your vet regarding the exact portion size and frequency for treats that you give your pet. You should also remember that hamsters love to hoard food. They pack their cheek pouches with food and anything that remains uneaten will be stored around their tank or cage. If you feed your hamster too much then you may end up with mouldy banana in hard to reach places around your hammies’ cage/tank.
